Larceny Charges under Penal Code 484 and 487

Any individual that is accused of taking and carrying away personal property belonging to another with the purpose of depriving the owner of its possession without the consent of the owner may be charged with larceny. It is important to note that larceny is a general term for the crime of theft and it is divided into two subsections: petty theft (PC 484) and grand theft (PC 487). Any of the theft crimes can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a felony except for petty theft, which is only charged as a misdemeanor. Petty theft consists of those crimes in which the value of the stolen goods is less than $400, while grand theft refers to those crimes in which the value of the stolen goods is greater than $400. The penalties for a felony conviction under grand theft are much more severe than a petty theft charge.
